hi! Abdulsaboor here.  i have a query that i am going to work on thesis topic

social media and life satisfaction among university students: self compassion as a moderator.

so my question is and i am confused if social media addiction or social media usage variable(s), which will be more valid in interaction among my topic variables.    so that it fits population and gets authentic as well as well supported study.     ???

hi, welcome to the psychologyroots
if you are going to conduct a research study and you are confused while selecting your variables.
before selecting your topics keep in mind some important tips
who is your population on your data can you easily collect data?
second thing social media addiction is a term widely used in literature, social media usage is a layman term
prefer social media addiction in your variables. another reason is you will find social media addiction scale or questionnaire easily.

if you need assistance in your research contact on this forum we will provide you professional help.

Both social media addiction and social media usage can be valid variables to consider in your study, depending on the specific research questions you are interested in exploring.

Social media addiction can be a useful variable to consider if you are interested in examining the negative effects of social media use on life satisfaction among university students. This variable may help you identify individuals who are at higher risk for experiencing negative outcomes related to social media use.

On the other hand, social media usage can be a more general measure of how often university students engage with social media and may provide a broader perspective on the relationship between social media and life satisfaction. It may also allow you to examine whether there is a threshold level of social media usage beyond which negative effects on life satisfaction are more likely to occur.

As for the moderator variable, self-compassion can be a valuable construct to consider as it has been found to buffer against the negative effects of social media use on mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. However, it is important to ensure that your sample includes individuals with a wide range of self-compassion levels to fully explore its moderating effects.

Ultimately, the choice of variables will depend on your research questions and hypotheses. It is important to carefully consider the theoretical underpinnings of your study and choose variables that align with your conceptual framework. Conducting a thorough literature review and consulting with experts in the field can also help you make informed decisions about which variables to include in your study.
