On August 27:

1936 — A committee on APA reorganization recommended inviting the Western Psychological Association, Midwestern Psychological Association, and Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology to become affiliates of the APA.

1947 — The Georgia Psychological Association was incorporated.

1957 — Leon Festinger's book A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance was published. Research in cognitive dissonance dominated experimental social psychology in the 1960s.

1965 — The Chicago Conference on Professional Preparation of Clinical Psychologists was held. The conference proposed greater emphasis on professional preparation than on scientific training.

1970 — The first annual meeting of the Association for Consumer Research was held at the Murray D. Lincoln Campus Center at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Robert Perloff, later president of the APA (1985), was elected president of the new organization.

1978 — The APA Council of Representatives voted to approve the petition to establish Division 38 (Health Psychology), doubling the number of divisions from the original 19 created in the 1946 reorganization of the APA.

1978 — The APA Council of Representatives adopted Guidelines for the Specialty Training and Certification of High School Teachers of Psychology. The APA has conducted an active high school teacher information program.
