1875 — Sir Henry Hallett Dale was born. With Otto Loewi, Dale's research identified the first known chemical neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Loewi and Dale received the Nobel prize in 1936 for their work.
1977 — The APA published new "Guidelines for Nonsexist Language in APA Journals" in The American Psychologist.
1980 — The petition to create APA Division 42 (Psychologists in Independent Practice) was filed. Richard Samuels was the chair of the petitioning group. The Council of Representatives approved the division on January 23, 1981.
1989 — The first Association for Psychological Science convention began, in Alexandria, Virginia. George Miller was the first speaker and James L. McGaugh was the first elected president. Before 2006, the society's name was the American Psychological Society
