1857 — Frank Angell was born. Angell did most of his work in psychophysics and founded the experimental laboratories at Cornell University (1891) and Stanford University (1893).
1892 — The APA was organized in G. Stanley Hall's study at Clark University. There is no precise roll of those in attendance, but 26 men had accepted membership in the new organization and 5 more were invited at this organizational meeting.
1893 — Fritz Perls was born. Perls was the founder, with Laura Perls, of Gestalt therapy, a humanistic psychotherapy popular in the 1960s. His book Gestalt Therapy: Excitement and Growth in the Human Personality (1951, with Ralph F. Hefferline and Paul Goodman) described the basis of his approach.
1895 — Gardner Murphy was born. Murphy's broad interests were represented by experiments and familiar texts in social psychology, personality, and the history of psychology. APA President, 1944; American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal, 1972.
1935 — Oscar K. Buros published Educational, Psychological, and Personality Tests of 1933-34. This was the first volume in the series that would become the Mental Measurements Yearbooks.
1952 — Neuroanatomist Santiago Ramón y Cajal appeared on a Spanish postal stamp.
1955 — Donald O. Hebb's article "Drives and the CNS (Conceptual Nervous System)" was published in Psychological Review. In 1979, this article was featured as a "citation classic" by the journal Current Contents.
1992 — On the occasion of the centennial of the founding of the APA, a plaque honoring G. Stanley Hall was placed in the wall of the Goddard Library at Clark University.
